Why Professional Car Detailing Is Worth It

Whether you drive a well-loved decades old minivan or a high-end grand tourer, there’s a moment every car owner experiences.

You look inside or outside your vehicle and think:

“How did it get this way?”

For some people, that moment comes when a school of goldfish crackers emerges beneath your feet as you round that final bend into your driveway.

For those with high end exotic cars, maybe it's that morning when you sit in your driveway, coffee mug in hand, admiring the car - but upon a closer inspection in the sunlight, you see a web of swirl marks in the paint.  The horror!

Two very different situations.  Two very different budgets.

But ... one solution?  I can hear your skepticism from here.

The Professional Difference

Although it might not be obvious to those who have never used a professional detailer, it must be said: professional detailing isn't merely a car wash.

No - it’s about restoring, protecting, and preserving your vehicle and its purpose - no matter what you drive.

Let’s look at why detailing makes sense for two very different types of vehicles.

Two Very Different Cars - One Good Reason to Get Them Detailed

Recently I had the chance to observe two very different vehicles and the process by which they were professionally detailed with Dream Machine Detailing.

To be honest, they couldn’t have been more different vehicles either:

  • A well-used Toyota Sienna minivan
  • A nearly new Aston Martin DB11 Shadow Edition

The Family Workhorse: 2010 Toyota Sienna

If you’re a parent with a minivan, you know well that it quickly becomes more than just a vehicle.

It’s a mobile locker room.

A snack bar.

A road-trip headquarters.

And sometimes all three in the same afternoon.

For most parents who have minivans, if you've ever had kids dump their snack in the seat, you might be exhausted vacuuming up goldfish for the hundredth time.  And you might wish someone else would do it.

But ... I get it.  Although professional detailers are more than capable of cleaning up the mess, is a professional detailer in the budget to pick up those goldfish every time?  Eh, perhaps not ... for most of us, anyway.  I expect you're probably not dropping professional detail coin every time Johnny drops his goldfish.  (Even if it does start to look like a koi pond back there.)

So, if car detailers aren’t doing koi pond rescues for you every week, maybe we should be using them for something a little less … fishy.

For example: have you ever considered how a professional detailer can help you maintain the safety of your family vehicle?  If I had to guess, probably not.

For older daily drivers like the Sienna, one of the most noticeable improvements from professional detailing isn’t about vacuuming or actually inside the car at all.

Instead - it’s the headlights! Over time, the clear plastic lenses on headlights begin to oxidize.

Sun exposure, road grime, and years of weather gradually turn them cloudy or yellow. Many drivers don’t realize how much light output they’ve lost until they see the difference after restoration. That was the case with the Toyota Sienna that was delivered to Dream Machines Detailing.

After more than a decade on the road, the headlights had developed the typical haze you see on many vehicles of that age.

During the day it mostly looked cosmetic, but at night it meant less light reaching the road ahead. Professional headlight restoration removes that oxidation and restores clarity to the lens. The process involves carefully polishing away the damaged outer layer of plastic and sealing the surface so it stays clear longer. The improvement can be dramatic!  Take a look for yourself.

Clear headlights allow more of the bulb’s light to actually reach the road, which means better nighttime visibility, better reaction time for obstacles, and improved safety overall. It’s one of those services that often gets overlooked because people think of detailing as something purely aesthetic. In reality, restoring headlights is one of the most practical safety investments you can make to an older daily driver.

Exotic Grand Tourer: Aston Martin DB11 Shadow Edition

Whereas the minivan had accumulated years of life and those inherent problems, the Aston Martin pictured here actually had the opposite problem.

It already looked amazing — but the owner wanted to keep it that way proactively.

Cars like the DB11 are rolling pieces of craftsmanship. The paint has incredible depth, and the body lines catch light in ways that make every angle interesting. But that also means imperfections show up quickly. Even careful washing can introduce tiny swirl marks in the paint. Over time they dull the finish, especially on darker colors.

For those of you with exotic sports cars, professional detailing for a car like this focuses on preserving that finish.

Paint correction removes minor imperfections, and careful polishing restores the clarity of the paint. Protective coatings like ceramics help keep it looking that way longer.

Standing next to it after the work was done, the reflections in the paint were almost mirror-like!

It looked exactly the way a car like that should - it was positively breathtaking.

What Both Cars Had in Common

Despite being completely different vehicles, the result was surprisingly similar.

The minivan went back to looking sharp but, even more importantly, its safety mission - its intended purpose - was back on point again.

On the other side, the Aston Martin was restored to looking as sharp and dramatic as the day it was built.

And that’s really the point of professional detailing.  It’s not just about making a car look clean.

It’s about restoring the experience of owning it and restoring the vehicle's purpose.

Whether that vehicle is a family minivan with years of memories in the seats or a handcrafted grand tourer like the Aston, the right professional care can restore that vehicle purpose back to its original intent.

A Detailer Who Actually Cares About the Details

Seeing both of these vehicles go through the detailing process made one thing clear: the difference isn’t just the tools or products being used.

It’s the care and patience behind the work.

A family vehicle with years of use needs someone willing to put in the time to bring it back.

Just the same, a high-end car needs someone who understands how to preserve delicate finishes without cutting corners.

And that kind of attention to detail is exactly what stands out about Dream Machine Detailing.  Family-owned and operated by Don Ford and his brother, James Ford, the immense attention to detail isn't an afterthought - it's part of the process.

If you are in or near the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area and your vehicle could use that kind of reset - whether it’s a well-loved daily driver or something a little more special - it’s worth taking a look at what they do.

You can learn more about their work and services at dreammachinedetailing.com.

And if you aren't near Milwaukee, make sure you give your local professional detailer a look.

After all, you'll be surprised how a focus on the details can enhance and restore your vehicle in ways you might not have even considered.

Overview

From the Ford Performance website:
"Shortly after the all-new 2005 Mustang was launched, talk of reintroducing a Bullitt edition was rampant among Mustang enthusiasts. With the sheet metal atop the new S-197 platform so closely mirroring the classic 1968 Mustang shape, it's no wonder that so many people were excited when Ford unveiled the Bullitt edition Mustang GT for 2008.

Engineers tapped Ford Racing for a host of upgrades to make the new Bullitt much more than just an appearance package. Ford Racing’s Power Upgrade Package added 15 extra horsepower to the Mustang GT’s 300 ponies. Suspension tweaks included stiffer shocks, springs, and a strut tower brace, giving the Bullitt extra bite in the corners. Bullitt-specific front brake pads and 3.73 rear gears rounded out the mechanical upgrades, save for a true dual-exhaust system that was specifically tuned to sound like Detective Frank Bullitt’s own 1968 Mustang movie car.

In keeping with the classic film, the 2008 Bullitt was stripped of badging, scoops and spoilers, with the faux gas cap on the trunk bearing the only name of the beast. A unique grille and specially crafted 18-inch wheels finished the exterior treatments, while Bullitt-specific interior trim with Bullitt badging and an aluminum shift knob completed the Bullitt transformation. Each 2008 Bullitt was assigned its own VIN-specific serial number on a special ID plate affixed to the car's strut tower brace.

Available in either Dark Highland Green (specific to the Bullitt) or simply Black, the 2008 Mustang Bullitt is a thoroughly modern take on the original movie car legend."

I purchased my 2008 Ford Mustang Bullitt, used, from a small dealer in Palatine Illinois on Feb 11 2016. This date was significant because it was exactly a year to the day that my father had passed away. My Dad was getting older and wanted to find a fast car to help make retiring from his motorcycling days a little easier. Unfortunately we didn't get to make that happen, but a year later I decided to take my fathers advice and pull the trigger on my own dream, a 2008 Ford Mustang Bullitt, build #0890. It had 79k on it and five previous owners, but was a very clean car and the price was right. The car was a stock Bullitt except for the California special front fascia and the side window louvers which really look great on the Bullitt. During my first summer with it I installed the Ford Racing adjustable handling package and the Ford Racing FR500S axle back exhaust. Both have been wonderful modifications. The car sits an inch lower and carves up the corners with precision, all while making an absolutely fantastic symphony of angry V8 noises. It truly is a Dream Machine for me and it does nothing but make me smile from ear to ear.
